Narration of a Vision Involving the Qur’an
(Reported to us) Abū Saʿīd ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb al-Rāzī—reported to us Muḥammad ibn Ayyūb al-Rāzī—he said: Muslim ibn Ibrāhīm informed us—he said: Hishām narrated to us from Qatādah from al-Ḥasan:
That a man died, and his brother saw him in a dream and said, “O my brother, which deeds do you find to be the best?”
He replied, “The Qur’an.”
He said, “Which part of the Qur’an is best?”
He replied, “Āyat al-Kursī.”
He asked, “Do people hope [for salvation]?”
He said, “Yes. You all learn, and we know—but we do not act.”
Interpretations of Seeing Surahs in Dreams
Sūrat al-Fātiḥah
Whoever sees that he is reciting Sūrat al-Fātiḥah, the doors of goodness will be opened for him and the doors of evil will be shut.
Sūrat al-Baqarah
Whoever sees that he is reciting Sūrat al-Baqarah, his life will be long and his religion good.
Sūrat Āl ʿImrān
Whoever sees that he is reciting Sūrat Āl ʿImrān, his mind will become clear, his soul purified, and he will be one who debates with the people of falsehood.
Sūrat al-Nisāʾ
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Nisāʾ will be a divider of inheritances, a man with noble free women, and he will be inherited from after a long life.
Sūrat al-Māʾidah
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Māʾidah, his status will be elevated, his certainty strengthened, and his piety refined.
Sūrat al-Anʿām
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Anʿām, his livestock, cattle, and animals will increase, and he will be granted generosity.
Sūrat al-Aʿrāf
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Aʿrāf will not leave this world until his feet tread upon Ṭūr Sīnāʾ.
Sūrat al-Anfāl
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Anfāl, Allāh will grant him victory over his enemies and provide him with spoils of war.
Sūrat al-Tawbah
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Tawbah will live among people praiseworthy and will die in a state of repentance.
Sūrat Yūnus
Whoever recites Sūrat Yūnus, his worship will be sound, and no plotting or sorcery will harm him.
Sūrat Hūd
Whoever recites Sūrat Hūd will be provided with crops and offspring.
Sūrat Yūsuf
Whoever recites Sūrat Yūsuf will first face oppression, then attain dominion, and will experience a journey in which he settles.
Sūrat al-Raʿd
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Raʿd will be a keeper of supplications, and gray hair will come to him quickly.
Sūrat Ibrāhīm
Whoever recites Sūrat Ibrāhīm, his condition and religion will be good in the sight of Allāh.
Sūrat al-Ḥijr
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Ḥijr will be praiseworthy before Allāh and among people.
Sūrat al-Naḥl
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Naḥl will be granted knowledge, and if he is ill, he will be cured.
Sūrat Banī Isrāʾīl
Whoever recites Sūrat Banī Isrāʾīl will have high rank with Allāh and be granted victory over his enemies.
Sūrat al-Kahf
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Kahf will attain his hopes and live a long life until he becomes weary of life and yearns for death.
Sūrat Maryam
Whoever recites Sūrat Maryam will revive the traditions of the prophets—peace be upon them—he will be falsely accused, but his innocence will be revealed.
Sūrat Ṭāhā
Whoever recites Sūrat Ṭāhā, the magic of magicians will not harm him.
Sūrat al-Anbiyāʾ
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Anbiyāʾ will receive relief after hardship, ease after difficulty, and will be granted knowledge and humility.
Sūrat al-Ḥajj
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Ḥajj will perform pilgrimage repeatedly, if Allāh wills.
Sūrat al-Muʾminūn
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Muʾminūn, his faith will be strengthened, and his life will end with faith.
Sūrat al-Nūr
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Nūr, Allāh will illuminate his heart and grave.
Sūrat al-Furqān
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Furqān will be one who distinguishes between truth and falsehood.
Sūrat al-Shuʿarāʾ
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Shuʿarāʾ, Allāh will protect him from indecencies.
Sūrat al-Naml
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Naml will be granted dominion.
Sūrat al-Qaṣaṣ
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Qaṣaṣ will be given a lawful treasure.
Sūrat al-ʿAnkabūt
Whoever recites Sūrat al-ʿAnkabūt will remain in Allāh’s protection and safeguarding until he dies.
Sūrat al-Rūm
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Rūm, Allāh will open through his hands a land of the disbelievers and guide a people through him.
Sūrat Luqmān
Whoever recites Sūrat Luqmān will be granted wisdom.
Sūrat al-Sajdah
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Sajdah will die in prostration and be among the successful with Allāh.
Sūrat al-Aḥzāb
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Aḥzāb will be among the people of piety and follow the truth.
Sūrat Sabaʾ
Whoever recites Sūrat Sabaʾ will become ascetic in the world and prefer solitude.
Sūrat Fāṭir
Whoever recites Sūrat Fāṭir, Allāh will open the doors of blessings for him.
Sūrat Yāsīn
Whoever recites Sūrat Yāsīn will be granted the love of the family of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ.
Sūrat al-Ṣāffāt
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Ṣāffāt, Allāh will provide him with a child who is certain in faith and obedient to him.
Sūrat Ṣād
Whoever recites Sūrat Ṣād, his wealth will increase, and he will become skilled in his craft.
Sūrat al-Zumar
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Zumar will have sincere religion and a good ending.
Sūrat al-Muʾmin (Ghāfir)
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Muʾmin will be granted high status in this world and the next, and goodness will flow through his hands.
Sūrat Ḥā Mīm al-Sajdah (Fussilat)
Whoever recites Sūrat Ḥā Mīm al-Sajdah will be a caller to truth, and his admirers will be many.
Sūrat Ḥā Mīm ʿAyn Sīn Qāf (al-Shūrā)
Whoever recites Sūrat Ḥā Mīm ʿAyn Sīn Qāf will live a long life until its end.
Sūrat al-Zukhruf
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Zukhruf will be truthful in his speech.
Sūrat al-Dukhān
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Dukhān will be granted wealth.
Sūrat al-Jāthiyah
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Jāthiyah will live in awe of his Lord for as long as he lives.
Sūrat al-Aḥqāf
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Aḥqāf will witness wonders in this world.
Sūrat Muḥammad
Whoever recites Sūrat Muḥammad, his conduct will be good.
Sūrat al-Fatḥ
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Fatḥ will be granted success in striving (jihād).
Sūrat al-Ḥujurāt
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Ḥujurāt will maintain ties of kinship.
Sūrat Qāf
Whoever recites Sūrat Qāf, his provision will be expanded.
Sūrat al-Dhāriyāt
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Dhāriyāt will be granted sustenance from farming and cultivation.
Sūrat al-Ṭūr
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Ṭūr, it indicates that he will reside near Makkah.
Sūrat al-Najm
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Najm will be granted a beautiful and distinguished child.
Sūrat al-Qamar
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Qamar may be afflicted by magic, but it will not harm him.
Sūrat al-Raḥmān
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Raḥmān will receive blessings in this world and mercy in the Hereafter.
Sūrat al-Wāqiʿah
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Wāqiʿah will be swift in obedience and acts of worship.
Sūrat al-Ḥadīd
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Ḥadīd will leave a lasting impact and enjoy good physical health.
Sūrat al-Mujādilah
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Mujādilah will debate the people of falsehood and overpower them with proof.
Sūrat al-Ḥashr
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Ḥashr, Allāh will destroy his enemies.
Sūrat al-Mumtaḥanah
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Mumtaḥanah will face a trial and be rewarded for it.
Sūrat al-Ṣaff
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Ṣaff will be martyred.
Sūrat al-Jumuʿah
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Jumuʿah, Allāh will gather for him all kinds of goodness.
Sūrat al-Munāfiqūn
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Munāfiqūn will be free from hypocrisy.
Sūrat al-Taghābun
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Taghābun will remain firm upon guidance.
Sūrat al-Ṭalāq
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Ṭalāq, it indicates a dispute between him and his wife that may lead to separation.
Sūrat al-Mulk
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Mulk, his properties and possessions will grow greatly.
Sūrat Nūn (al-Qalam)
Whoever recites Sūrat Nūn will be granted eloquence and writing ability.
Sūrat al-Ḥāqqah
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Ḥāqqah will be on the path of truth.
Sūrat al-Maʿārij
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Maʿārij will be secure and victorious.
Sūrat Nūḥ
Whoever recites Sūrat Nūḥ will command good, forbid evil, and triumph over enemies.
Sūrat al-Jinn
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Jinn will be protected from the evil of the jinn.
Sūrat al-Muzzammil
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Muzzammil will be granted success in night prayer.
Sūrat al-Muddaththir
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Muddaththir, his inner character will be good, and he will be patient.
Sūrat al-Qiyāmah
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Qiyāmah will avoid swearing oaths and never swear at all.
Sūrat Hal Atā (al-Insān)
Whoever recites Sūrat Hal Atā will be generous, granted gratitude, and live a pleasant life.
Sūrat al-Mursalāt
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Mursalāt, his provision will be expanded.
Sūrat ʿAmma Yatasaʾālūn (al-Nabaʾ)
Whoever recites Sūrat ʿAmma Yatasaʾālūn, his status will be elevated, and his name will be widely and honorably mentioned.
Sūrat al-Nāziʿāt
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Nāziʿāt, worries and betrayals will be removed from his heart.
Sūrat ʿAbasa
Whoever recites Sūrat ʿAbasa will increase in giving zakāh and charity.
Sūrat al-Takwīr
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Takwīr will frequently travel toward the East, and his journeys will bring him abundant profit.
Sūrat al-Infiṭār
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Infiṭār will be brought close to rulers and be honored by them.
Sūrat al-Muṭaffifīn
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Muṭaffifīn will be granted trustworthiness, loyalty, and justice.
Sūrat al-Inshiqāq
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Inshiqāq will have many children and descendants.
Sūrat al-Burūj
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Burūj will be relieved of worries and honored with a special kind of knowledge—it is said: the knowledge of the stars.
Sūrat al-Ṭāriq
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Ṭāriq will be inspired to frequently glorify (Allāh).
Sūrat Sabbih (al-Aʿlā)
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Aʿlā, his affairs will be made easy for him.
Sūrat al-Ghāshiyah
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Ghāshiyah, his status will rise, and his fame and knowledge will spread.
Sūrat al-Fajr
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Fajr will be clothed with radiance.
Sūrat al-Balad
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Balad will be guided to feed the needy, honor orphans, and show mercy to the weak.
Sūrat al-Shams
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Shams will be granted understanding and sharp intelligence in matters.
Sūrat al-Layl
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Layl will be granted success in night worship and be protected from disgrace and exposure.
Sūrat al-Ḍuḥā
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Ḍuḥā will honor the poor and orphans.
It is also narrated that a man from among the ʿAlawiyyīn saw in his dream that Sūrat al-Ḍuḥā was written on his forehead. He informed Ibn al-Musayyib, who interpreted it as a sign of nearing death. The ʿAlawī died the following night.
Sūrat Alam Nashraḥ (al-Inshirāḥ)
Whoever recites Sūrat Alam Nashraḥ, Allāh will open his heart to Islām, ease his affairs, and remove his worries.
Sūrat al-Tīn
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Tīn, his needs will be fulfilled quickly, and his provision will come easily.
Sūrat Iqraʾ (al-ʿAlaq)
Whoever recites Sūrat Iqraʾ will be granted the ability to write, eloquence, and humility.
Sūrat al-Qadr
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Qadr, his life will be long and his status elevated.
Sūrat Lam Yakun (al-Bayyinah)
Whoever recites Sūrat Lam Yakun, Allāh will guide a misguided people through him.
Sūrat al-Zalzalah
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Zalzalah, Allāh will shake the feet of the disbelievers through him.
Sūrat al-ʿĀdiyāt
Whoever recites Sūrat al-ʿĀdiyāt will be granted horses and the means to keep and care for them.
Sūrat al-Qāriʿah
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Qāriʿah will be honored with worship and piety.
Sūrat al-Takāthur
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Takāthur will become ascetic regarding wealth and will give up hoarding it.
Sūrat al-ʿAṣr
Whoever recites Sūrat al-ʿAṣr will be granted patience, supported in truth, and though he may suffer loss in business, he will eventually gain much profit.
Sūrat al-Humazah
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Humazah will accumulate wealth that benefits him in righteous deeds.
Sūrat al-Fīl
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Fīl will be granted victory over his enemies, and conquests will occur through him for Islām.
Sūrat Quraysh
Whoever recites Sūrat Quraysh will feed the poor, and Allāh will place love for him in the hearts of His servants.
Sūrat Araʾayta (al-Māʿūn)
Whoever recites Sūrat Araʾayta will overcome those who oppose and resist him.
Sūrat al-Kawthar
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Kawthar will attain abundant goodness in both worlds.
Sūrat al-Kāfirūn
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Kāfirūn will be aided in striving against the disbelievers.
Sūrat al-Naṣr
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Naṣr, Allāh will grant him victory over his enemies.
This vision also indicates that the dreamer’s death is near, as it is the sūrah in which the Prophet ﷺ was given news of his own passing.
It is narrated that a man came to Ibn Sīrīn and said: “I saw in a dream as if I were reciting Sūrat al-Fatḥ.”
Ibn Sīrīn said, “Prepare your will, for your end has come.”
The man asked, “Why?”
He replied, “Because it was the last sūrah revealed from the heavens.”
And so it happened.
Sūrat Tabbat (al-Masad)
Whoever recites Sūrat Tabbat, someone from among the hypocrites will oppose him and seek his faults, but Allāh Almighty will destroy that enemy.
Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ will attain his desires, his reputation will grow, and he will be protected from slips in his monotheism.
It is also said that he will have few dependents and a pleasant life.
However, its recitation in a dream may also indicate approaching death.
It is narrated that a righteous man saw Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ written between his eyes. When he related this to Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, he said:
“If your vision is true, then your death is near.”
And it happened as he said.
Sūrat al-Falaq
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Falaq, Allāh will protect him from the harm of humans, jinn, harmful creatures, and the envious.
Sūrat al-Nās
Whoever recites Sūrat al-Nās will be protected from calamities, and he will be safeguarded from Satan, his army, and their whisperings.
